Heavy Rain Update - Wednesday, May 19, 2021
Click HERE, HERE, and HERE for an update concerning the heavy rain threat today into Thursday. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through 7 PM CDT for much of SE LA and S MS with the exception of Harrison and Jackson Counties on the MS coast. Wind Advisories have also been issued for the MS coastal counties, and portions of SE LA near and south of Lake Pontchartrain through 4 PM CDT this afternoon, due to expected southeast winds 20 to 30 mph.

WHAT: MODERATE RISK of Heavy Rain
MARGINAL RISK of Severe Weather
WHEN: Mainly during the daytime hours today, but some rain could linger into Thursday morning.
WHERE: Much of SE LA and S MS, with the greatest threat across the river parishes of SE LA where the ground is already saturated.
CONFIDENCE: We are confident that most areas will see periods of showers and storms today. A few storms could be strong to severe, mainly during the daylight hours today. We are less confident in the exact amounts and specific locations where heavy rain will occur. However, any heavy rain over portions of the river parishes of SE LA could produce flash flooding.

Rainfall of 2 to 3 inches is currently forecast. Locally higher amounts will be possible. Most of the rain is expected during the daytime hours today.

Expect ponding of water in low lying areas and potential for flash flooding in areas that receive the most rain

Rises on area rivers can be expected as water drains into the rivers. Mostly minor river flooding will be possible, but a few points could crest in the moderate range, particularly in the Amite, Comite and Tangipahoa Basins

A few thunderstorms, mainly during the day today, could produce wind gusts to 60 mph and/or quarter size hail.
