Heavy Rainfall Threat - Monday May 17, 2021

Overview:

WHAT: MARGINAL RISK to SLIGHT RISK of Heavy Rain WHEN: Mainly this afternoon through Tuesday afternoon, but potentially into Tuesday night. WHERE: Slight Risk area primarily near and south of Interstate 10 from New Orleans westward. Marginal Risk across much of the remainder of southeast Louisiana and portions of southwest Mississippi. See graphics below.

CONFIDENCE: There is quite a bit of uncertainty regarding rain amounts and area of highest impact. However, there is enough of a threat of heavy rain to heighten awareness. If confidence continues to increase, a Flash Flood Watch may be issued for portions of the area later today.

Impacts:

  • Rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected across much of southeast Louisiana with a few pockets of 3 to 5 inch totals. Locally higher amounts will be possible

  • Expect ponding of water in low lying areas and some potential for localized flash flooding

The graphics highlight the threat areas today and tomorrow, as well as a total rainfall graphic for today through Wednesday afternoon. Most of the rainfall is forecast to occur prior to Tuesday evening.
