Heavy Rainfall/Severe Update - May 23, 2022 7 AM

Changes from previous update: Introduction of severe weather possibility Wed night.

Overview:

WHAT: SLIGHT RISK of flooding rainfall today, MARGINAL RISK of severe weather Wednesday night.

WHEN: Slight risk of flooding rainfall mainly through the daylight hours today. Marginal risk of severe weather mainly late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

WHERE: Slight flooding risk for coastal sections of SELA and Mississippi. Marginal severe risk along and north of a line from Tylertown to Baton Rouge.

CONFIDENCE: Moderate confidence in isolated areas receiving high rain rates up to 4" per hour with the strongest thunderstorms. Low confidence in severe thunderstorms due to later timing.

Impacts:

The main threats associated with slight risk of flooding rainfall today:

  • Rainfall rates up to 4" per hour could cause flooding of areas with poor drainage

  • Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches with isolated higher amounts are expected mainly in the slight risk area

The main threats associated with any severe storms will be:

  • Wind gusts greater than 60 mph will be possible

  • Trees and powerlines could be damaged and lead to isolated/small scale power outages

  • Isolated tornadoes

  • The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of producing rainfall up to 3" per hour, causing localized flooding of poorly drained areas
