Hurricane Delta Update - 10PM 10/6/20

Click HERE for an update concerning Hurricane Delta.

Changes from previous update:

  • No significant changes from the previous advisory.

Overview:

  • Hurricane Delta is forecast to move generally west-northwest across the western Caribbean and the Yucatan Peninsula later tonight into early tomorrow morning. The system is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico by Wednesday morning and is expected to bring impacts to the northern Gulf coast from Thursday night through Saturday morning.

Confidence:

  • If the current forecast holds, we remain confident that moderate to significant impacts will be experienced across portions of SE LA and S MS

  • There continues to be some uncertainty in the track but more so the intensity forecast. Confidence is increasing in the track forecast. At some point, the system is expected to turn more northward and depending on when and where that occurs the expected impacts could still change significantly.

Impacts:

  • Life-threatening storm surge is possible Thursday night through Saturday morning especially along east and south-facing shores near and east of the center of circulation.

  • Heavy rainfall will be possible Thursday through Saturday.

  • Wind impacts will greatly depend on the eventual track and intensity of Hurricane Delta but will be most likely from Friday into Saturday. The earliest reasonable time for tropical storm force winds to begin affecting coastal locations in Southeast Louisiana is Thursday night.

The attached briefing highlights the threats associated with this system.
