Hurricane Ida Briefing 8/27/21 At 5 PM

Changes from the last update:

  • Increase to Category 4 with 140 mph at landfall..
  • Increase in storm surge to 10 to 15 ft for areas west of the MS River.

Overview:

  • Hurricane Ida will continue northwest with strengthening expected before entering the Southeastern Gulf late Friday or early Saturday.
  • This system is expected to continue northwest and is currently forecast to impact portions of the northern Gulf coast Sunday through early Monday.

Confidence:

  • There is high confidence in the forecast track and intensity of this system; moderate confidence with timing.

Impacts

Winds

  • Hurricane-force winds (>74mph) will be possible for our entire area
  • Strong hurricane-force winds (>110mph) will be possible for portions of our area, including Metro New Orleans, Metro Baton Rouge and all coastal LA parishes

Storm Surge

  • Storm Surge values have increased since the last advisory
  • 10-15ft of inundation from Morgan City of Mouth of the MS River.
  • 7-11ft of inundation from Mouth of the MS River to Ocean Springs
  • 4-7ft  of inundation Ocean Springs to the AL border
  • 4-7ft  of inundation Lake Pontchartrain
  • 3-5ft  of inundation Lake Maurepas

Rainfall/Inland Flooding

  • 8-16" of rain is possible across our forecast area with isolated higher amounts of 20" possible 
  • The heaviest rainfall will be possible Sunday and Monday

Tornadoes

  • There is a risk of weak/short-lived tornadoes across SE LA and S MS
