PONCHATOULA—Due to the forecast track for Tropical Storm Barry to impact our area, Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller announced a “recommended evacuation" to those residents in low-lying areas south of LA 22.

“While this is not a mandatory evacuation, I strongly encourage our residents who live in low-lying, flood-prone areas south of LA 22 to prepare now and voluntarily evacuate their homes in advance of landfall and the flood surge that forecasters are predicting with this storm,” Miller said.

Miller said a storm shelter will open at Hammond Westside Montessori School, located at 2600 Westpark Avenue in Hammond, starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 11. Residents who choose to use this shelter should bring all necessary toiletries, medication, baby supplies (if applicable), and clothing to ride out the storm.

Miller encourages residents to stay tuned to the National Weather Service and local media. Tangipahoa Parish Government will also post updates on their Tangipahoa.org website and on the parish’s social media.
