AMITE—In keeping with the Governor’s recent order, Tangipahoa Parish Government offices will close half-day on Friday, June 18, 2021, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller said the parish will recognize the holiday this year by closing parish offices at noon on Friday. Miller said the Tangipahoa Parish Landfill will remain open as usual on Friday, due to the approach of a tropical weather system in the Gulf of Mexico.

Earlier this week, Gov. John Bel Edwards signed HB 554 (Act 128) enacting the Juneteenth celebration into law and making it a permanent state holiday.

Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger led Union soldieries into Galveston, Texas, bringing news that the Civil War had ended and shared the news that the Emancipation Proclamation which was signed more than two years earlier had freed all those who were previously enslaved.

Act 128 designates the third Saturday in June as Juneteenth Day throughout Louisiana. Beginning in 2022, all state offices will be closed the Friday before that Saturday.
