Tangipahoa Parish Government Receives Litter Grants

AMITE—Tangipahoa Parish Government will be able to expand its growing litter abatement program, thanks in part to three new grants from two community partners.

Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller said Keep Louisiana Beautiful has awarded the parish two new grants to help combat litter. The first includes funding to purchase five public trash receptacles to combat five “hot spots” for litter in the Amite area. The second will fund more than $4,000 in litter enforcement cameras and signage which will be placed in areas where crews have had to make repeated clean-ups for trash and illegal dumping.

“On behalf of the Tangipahoa Parish Council and our entire Tangipahoa Parish Government team, I want to thank KLB for their continued support in helping us keep Tangipahoa Parish Beautiful in 2021,” Miller said.

Parish leaders are also pleased to announce the receipt of a new grant for litter abatement and beautification in the Kentwood area from the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund. Miller said the parish will coordinate this project with the Town of Kentwood.

“We are immensely grateful for this grant from the Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund, and we look forward to partnering with the Kentwood community on this beautification project,” Miller said.

Over the last six years, Tangipahoa Parish Government has stepped up its litter abatement and beautification efforts, using a three-prong attack. Parish leaders work in partnership with community volunteers and the Keep Tangipahoa Beautiful Committee to educate and bring awareness to the litter issue in our parish. The team also actively enforces litter laws and has aggressively investigated illegal dumping at sites across the parish. TPG also utilizes work crews to pick up trash along local roadways and has invested in programs like the Osprey Initiative’s “Litter Gitter” to help clear garbage and debris from Tangipahoa waterways. 

“Our primary goal is to eliminate the litter issue that challenges our parish by changing behavior through education, beautification, and enforcement,” the Parish President said.

Miller said these efforts would not be possible without the support of local citizens who volunteer their time to help Keep Tangipahoa Beautiful.
