Tropical Storm Cristobal 5:30 a.m. Update - 06/07/2020

Good Morning, 

Here is an update concerning Tropical Storm Cristobal. Click HERE to see the attached briefing that provides more specific information regarding the threats associated with this system.

Changes From Previous Update:

- There are no significant changes from the previous update. Only change has been that Cristobal is no longer forecast to strengthen prior to landfall. Track remains the same.

- We are now under a rare HIGH RISK for excessive rainfall today and tonight for portions of southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi. Please see briefing slides for details.

Overview:

• TS Cristobal is still struggling to overcome dry air, and is no longer forecast to strengthen before moving toward the Louisiana coast

• Broken bands of showers are already affecting the area and a few observation stations have begun reporting sustained tropical storm force winds.

• More significant impacts are expected to begin across the local area early this morning, with deteriorating conditions expected through the day today and into tonight.

Confidence:

We have moderate to high confidence in the impacts associated with this storm

Impacts:

• Several rounds of potentially heavy rainfall are possible, with some rounds well ahead of the storm. Flash flooding will be possible - especially where any rain bands result in prolonged periods of heavy rainfall. Dangerous, life-threatening flooding will be possible today and tonight.

• Coastal flooding is expected due to storm surge. The following inundation depths are forecast: 3-5 ft from the mouth of the MS River to Ocean Springs 2-4 ft from Morgan City to the mouth of the MS River 1-3 ft from Ocean Springs to the MS/AL border and around the shores of Lakes Pontchartrain and Maurepas

• Sustained tropical storm force winds are expected across portions of of SE LA and SW and Coastal MS. Strong tropical storm force winds (greater than 58mph) will be possible across some areas as well and could cause damage to trees and power lines, as well as some minor structural damage.

• The greatest impacts (highest winds, surge, and rain) could occur well away from the center
