AMITE—Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller has declared June 5 as “Ms. Virginia (Jenny) Baker Day” recognition of the longtime parish employee who is retiring after 42 years of service.

“Ms. Virginia Baker’ has dedicated her entire career in service to the people of Tangipahoa Parish. Not only has she played a critical role in leading our Parish Government team, she has also worked diligently to help our parish grow and thrive from its time under the Police Jury and transitioning to the Home Rule Charter form of Parish Government,” Miller said.

Baker’s career with the parish began in May 1979, while the parish was still under the Police Jury form of government. She was hired as an accounting clerk under the Ceta program. In January, 1994, then-Parish President Gordon A. Burgess promoted Baker and appointed her as the accounting office manager for the parish. Less than 18 months later, she was promoted again, this time to the position of head accountant/office manager for Tangipahoa Parish Government.

In February 2003, Baker was prompted to Personnel Director for the parish, and she has led the Human Resources Department from that time until her retirement, which became effective on June 5.

“Over the last four decades, Ms. Jenny planned, led, directed, developed, and coordinated policies and trainings to keep Tangipahoa Parish Government moving in the right direction,” Miller said. “In recent years, she has led our recruiting, interviewing, and hiring program, and she has been an invaluable member of our leadership team.”

“On behalf of our entire Tangipahoa Parish Government team, the Tangipahoa Parish Council and the citizens of Tangipahoa, I want to express my sincere appreciation to Ms. Jenny for her loyalty over the past forty-two years and wish her much happiness, good health, and many blessings as she begins this exciting new chapter in her life,” Miller said.
