Coastal Flood Update - May 24, 2021

Changes since previous update:

  • None.

Overview:

Significant coastal flooding is ongoing over western portions of the Lake Pontchartrain and Maurepas basin.  Water levels continue to slowly fall as winds have relaxed, but remain around 3 feet above ground level in low lying portions of St. John, St. James, Ascension, and Livingston Parishes.  A coastal flood warning remains in effect through 6 PM today due to these high water levels.

Minor coastal flooding is ongoing in low lying areas near the shore of Lake Pontchartrain in southern Tangipahoa Parish and low lying areas near the shores of Lake Des Allemands and Lake Salvador in St. Charles Parish.  Water levels continue to slowly fall, but will remain 1 to 2 feet above ground level through this afternoon.

All remaining coastal areas of Southeast Louisiana and Coastal Mississippi are not experiencing coastal flooding and are not expected to experience coastal flooding today.  

Impacts:

  • Numerous low lying coastal roads will be covered in water and impassable.
  • non-elevated low lying homes and businesses could experience flooding.
