Excessive Rainfall and Severe Weather Potential - August 22, 2022 7 AM CDT

Click HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE for an update concerning the current heavy rain and severe weather threat.

Changes from previous update:

  • A marginal risk for severe weather has been added to portions of the region including the potential for strong gusty winds and perhaps a brief tornado/waterspout or two.

Overview:

WHAT: MARGINAL RISK to SLIGHT RISK of Excessive Rainfall today, with a MARGINAL to SLIGHT risk continuing for portions of the area through midweek. A MARGINAL RISK for severe thunderstorms today.

WHEN:  The shower and thunderstorm coverage should increase later this morning and into the afternoon.

WHERE:  Threat for today is generally near and north of the Interstate 10 corridor with the best potential for severe weather west of I55 and north of I10/12.

CONFIDENCE: We are confident that there will be thunderstorms across the area and moderate to high confidence in heavy rainfall somewhere across portions of the forecast area today. Exactly where this occurs has a lower confidence level. Heavily urbanized and other flood prone areas may experience flooding today, especially if multiple storms impact the same location(s). Confidence is moderate regarding a few strong thunderstorms out near the Baton Rouge areas and locations west of I55 in South Mississippi.

Impacts:

  • Rainfall rates up to 3 to 4 inches per hour could cause flooding of low lying and poorly drained areas.

  • Expect ponding of water in low lying areas and some potential for localized flash flooding

  • Wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour will be possible

  • An isolated brief waterspout or tornado cannot be ruled out
