Heavy Rainfall Threat Tuesday May 18, 2021

Changes from previous update:

  • The threat of heavy rainfall/flash flooding has expanded to include much of the area.

  • The Flash Flood Watch has been expanded to include much of the area.

Overview: WHAT: MODERATE RISK of Heavy Rain WHEN: Through at least Wednesday morning WHERE: All of southeast Louisiana and most of south Mississippi CONFIDENCE: 

  • We are confident that there will be thunderstorms across the area and that a few will produce heavy rainfall, especially this morning. We are less confident in exactly where the greatest threat will occur this afternoon and overnight.

Impacts:

  • Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches is currently forecast for much of southeast Louisiana. Locally higher amounts will be possible. Rain amounts over south Mississippi are likely to be between 2 and 4 inches in most areas, with locally higher amounts possible.

  • Widespread and significant flash flooding will be possible. High water rescues may become necessary in areas that receive the heaviest rainfall.

  • As water drains into area rivers, flooding will be possible
