Click HERE for update concerning Hurricane Delta.

Changes from previous update:

  • None.

Overview:

  • Hurricane Delta will continue to move northwest in the Gulf of Mexico today, and will turn more northward tonight. Hurricane Delta is forecast to make landfall along the Southwest Louisiana coast by Friday afternoon.

Confidence:

  • If the current forecast holds, we are confident that minor to moderate impacts will be experienced across portions of SE LA and S MS. Storm surge and wind will be the most significant impacts. Storm surge impacts will be greatest for areas of coastal Southeast Louisiana between the Atchafalaya River and the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River. Wind impacts will be greatest for areas west of the I-55 corridor in Southeast Louisiana and Southwest Mississippi.

Impacts:

Storm Surge:

  • 7-11 feet of inundation: Pecan Island to Port Fourchon

  • 4-6 feet of inundation: Port Fourchon to Ocean Springs, including Lake Borgne

  • 3-5 feet of inundation: Lake Pontchartrain and Maurepas

  • 2-4 feet of inundation: Ocean Springs to the AL/FL State Line

Wind and tornado:

  • Strong tropical storm force wind gusts are forecast mainly to the west of I-55 in Southeast Louisiana and Southwest Mississippi.

  • These winds could result in minor damage mainly to trees, powerlines, and weaker structures.

  • A few tornadoes will be possible in the storm’s rain bands. Tornadoes in these situations are typically short-lived, but they move very quickly.

Rainfall/Flooding:

  • Rainfall of 4 to 6 inches is currently forecast for areas to the west of the I-55 corridor in Southeast Louisiana and Southwest Mississippi. Locally higher amounts will be possible.

  • Expect ponding of water in low lying areas and some potential for localized flash flooding.

The attached briefing highlights the threats associated with this system.
