Severe Weather and Heavy Rainfall Update for Tuesday & Wednesday - 4/13/2021 5AM

What has changed since last update:

• A Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for all of SE LA and portions of southern MS.
• There is a Slight Risk for severe weather for this afternoon and evening.
• There is a Marginal Risk for severe weather on Wednesday.
• There is a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall on Wednesday.
• Rainfall totals for today have increased slightly.

Overview:

WHAT: Slight Risk for severe weather and excessive rainfall today.

Marginal Risk for severe weather / Slight Risk for excessive rainfall Wednesday.

WHEN:

For Today: Primarily after noon through the afternoon/evening hours.

For Wednesday: All day from the early morning through the evening hours.

WHERE:

For Today: The majority of southeastern Louisiana and a small portion of western coastal Mississippi.

For Wednesday: All of southeastern LA and southern MS.

CONFIDENCE:

• Moderate confidence on the potential for severe weather and excessive rainfall today.

• Slightly lower confidence on the potential for severe weather and excessive rainfall on Wednesday (mainly pertaining to location).

Impacts:

Severe Weather Impacts:

• The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph can down trees and powerlines, and cause minor structural damage. Other threats include large hail, dangerous lightning and a few small tornadoes can not be ruled out.

Heavy Rain/Flooding Impacts:

• 3 to 5 inches of rain is forecast across portions of southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi through Thursday morning.

• Locally higher amounts will be possible, especially across southeastern LA between (and including) Baton Rouge to New Orleans, LA

• Ponding of water in low lying and poor drainage areas is likely, with localized flash flooding possible

• Additional rises on area rivers will be possible.

• NOTE: Current RFC river forecasts include 24 hours of precipitation, but we will be discussing including 48 hours of forecast precipitation in river forecasts early this morning.
