Severe Weather Threat for Today Wednesday 3/17/21

Here is an update concerning the severe weather threat today.

Changes from previous update:

  • The threat of severe weather has increased areawide.

  • Southwest Mississippi and adjacent LA parishes could be on the southern portion of a severe weather outbreak

Overview:

WHAT: SLIGHT RISK to MODERATE RISK of Severe Weather

WHEN: Mainly afternoon hours west of I-55 and evening hours east of I-55. However, there is a chance for low end severe storms late this morning along I-12 corridor

WHERE: The highest risk will be north of I-12, especially those in southwest Mississippi.

CONFIDENCE:

  • We are confident that there will be thunderstorms across the area and that at least a few will be severe.

Impacts:

The main threats associated with any severe storms will be:

  • Wind gusts greater than 60 mph will be possible

  • Hail of 1 inch in diameter or larger will be possible

  • Tornadoes will be possible, a few could be strong with long tracks in the MODERATE RISK area.

  • In addition to the severe weather threat, rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is forecast with locally higher amounts possible.
