PONCHATOULA—Tangipahoa Parish is beginning its recovery process in the wake of Hurricane Ida, and Parish President Robby Miller says now is the time for residents to begin placing storm-generated debris on the public right-of-way.

The public right-of-way is the area of a residential property that extends from the street to the sidewalk, ditch, utility pole, or easement. 

Miller asks residents to separate debris into three categories: vegetation (woody, burnable debris such as limbs and shrubs), construction materials, and appliances. Each debris group will be collected separately.

Woody items like tree limbs and shrubs should not be bagged. Pile those items as neatly as possible; however, do not place them in areas where they can impede or limit drainage in the event of rain, Miller said. He also advised residents to refrain from placing debris near water meters, fire hydrants, or any other above-ground utility.

Household hazardous waste, roof shingles, electronics, and tires resulting from Hurricane Ida may also be placed separately at the curb for debris collection.

Only loose materials placed on the public right-of-way will be eligible for collection. No materials piled on private property will be collected by debris contractors.

If all of the debris piled on the property is not collected during the initial pass, please continue to leave the remaining items on the right-of-way for collection on subsequent passes, Miller advised.
