Tropical Weather Update August 16th, 2021

Changes from the previous update:

  • Tropical Depression Grace forecast shifted farther south

Overview:

Tropical Storm Fred:

  • Tropical Storm Fred continues to move toward the Florida panhandle at 9 mph and is expected to make landfall this afternoon or early evening.

Tropical Depression Grace:

  • Tropical Depression Grace is currently near the Dominican Republic.
  • Grace is expected to fluctuate in intensity, remaining fairly unorganized in the near term due to land interaction as it tracks west-northwestward across the Caribbean Sea through midweek.

Confidence:

Tropical Storm Fred:

  • There is high confidence in the forecast track and near-normal confidence in the intensity forecast.

Tropical Depression Grace:

  • There is normal confidence in the track and intensity forecast through the next several days.

Potential Impacts:

Tropical Storm Fred:

  • Higher than normal water levels of 1 to 2 feet inundation could occur at high tide for coastal areas east of the Mississippi River today.

Tropical Depression Grace:

  • This system poses no immediate threat to the northern Gulf Coast for the next 72 hours, however, this storm should at least be monitored as we approach the latter part of this week.
